"WTF? - THE GENO SMITH SITUATION"

Hi Friends!

Today's "WTF?" c) stevenn beck

Re the Jets' "Geno Smith situation" (for those who don't know, Geno Smith, the young, second-year quarterback of the last place Jets, missed last Saturday's important team meeting. The game against the home-team San Diego Chargers was played the following day and the Jets suffered an embarrassing defeat.

I'll play along for a moment and comment on the story as if it actually deserved the level of importance attached to it by the media. (This is my own desperate attempt to fit in with the bulk of the population.) So - If we - for the moment - were to take the Smiith story at face value - it's pretty incredible that Mr. Smith, hanging onto his prestigious and extraordinarily well-paying job by the skin of his teeth, would miss the team meeting. After all - he IS the team quarterback. (Of course, the fact that the contract he signed as a rookie back in July 2013 for $5 million might have something to do with Smith's lack of attention to his responsibilities. FIVE MILLION DOLLARS - before the man had even played one game.) Smith indicated after-the-fact that he'd gone to a movie (he couldn't recall the name however) and that he'd confused "San Diego time" with "New York time" (due to the fact the Jets like to keep the players on a New York time schedule to keep disruptions to their routines to a minimum.)

Uhhh….damnit...the man is the FREAKIN' QUARTERBACK, a position requiring a great deal of intelligence (one would think) not to mention extraordinary degree of commitment and competitiveness. (The offensive general on the field. Not to mention the fact that he'd graduated COLLEGE.)

So...Mr. Smith stated that he couldn't remember the name of the movie he'd seen the day before? And- he was confused by the three hour time difference?

In addition, Rex Ryan, the Jets' coach who is ALSO barely hanging on, indicated that the matter of Smith's absence would be handled internally….and decided to start the man the next day at quarterback instead of taking a stand and benching him. As the leader - and authority figure - of the team, that's SOME message to send to tSmith's teammates. Geno ("Mr. Rules Don't Apply To Him") Smith…

But finally….let us get back to reality here….the story occupied TWO FULL PARAGRAPHS in the daily newspaper. Wars, disease…cop murderers…barely mentioned...

And so - the Geno Smith story aside - today's big "WTF?" goes out to America's continuing preoccupation with the mundane while the walls keep tumbling down…

See you all soon- be safe!
