"WTF? HELD PRISONER ON THE WHITESTONE BRIDGE"

Hi Friends

Today's "WTF?" © stevenn beck

There is on-going construction on the Whitestone Bridge. OK- I can understand that maintaining our national infrastructure is important and might involve some shared inconvenience. But- you have to be smart about it….don't you?

So- overnight - when presumably there is a reduction in vehicular traffic - two of the three lanes are blocked off coming back from the Bronx. But because this is New York - the metropolitan area that "never sleeps" - the number of cars transversing the bridge is still high regardless of the time of night.

And so we come to last evening's aggravating situation where traffic on the bridge access roads backed up for miles - and signs informing motorists to "take alternate routes" were posted ONLY when you came up to the actual bridge itself (what "alternate route" - take the car into the water and swim back to Queens?) In addition, visibility over the bridge was extremely limited due to the number of large trucks…don't THEY ever sleep?...and when the lanes that were closed suddenly shifted - why would that by-the-way? - there was limited time to react - and drivers had to suddenly react to the change. Leading to a rather chaotic and potentially dangerous situation.

Finally….there was not one bit of work actually being done, just one lone worker in a construction vehicle parked off to the side. HE looked like he was sound asleep. (Good for him that he could sleep with hundreds of automobiles passing just a few feet away.)

Forty-five minutes at midnight to travel over the Whitestone Bridge?

No work being done?

Lanes not clearly marked?

Inadequate signage?

Just another day in paradise….

I mean, WTF?
